Mind/Body/Technique training: Forms
We use the traditional Chinese internal martial arts method of practicing forms, mindfully and carefully to enhance the link and coordination between mind and body. Done slowly and in a relaxed way the training helps to improve health, increase body and mind relaxation, reduce muscle tension and build better breathing patterns. Practice is also designed to build powerful body postures and mechanics that enhance your ability to absorb and issue force and power.
Internal Strength training
In sport science there is the concept of GPP (general physical preparation) and SPP (special physical preparation). GPP is training the build general fitness attributes such as strength, power and endurance in a very whole but unfocused way. SPP sharpens this physical development into more specific ways to meet the needs of a particular sport or outcome.
Internal Strength training combines elements of both GPP and SPP directly aimed at creating the right strength and power and body mechanics for martial artists. The exercises also seek to improve the functioning of the inner organs of the body as well as the muscles, tendons, fascia and so on. The result is very high levels of strength and power that can be expressed in ways very useful for combat. Endurance also improves significantly.
Urban wrestling/grappling/conditioned response training
These exercises, drills and practices are designed to develop the ability to easily control an opponent at close range once in the wrestling or grappling zone. The adjective is to create highly sensitive skills that can detect, understand and outmanoeuvre an opponents power and force when in wrestling exchanges so that you can maintain balance, stay on your feet and then trip, sweep or throw the opponent down.
Free fighting training
A large curriculum of drills and techniques practiced ideally with a partner. Step by step you learn and drill techniques that can counter all types of self defence problems. As your skills develop you can practice with more speed and intensity until you reach the stage where you can easily defend any attack and counter attack effectively with vital point striking, high leverage throws and sweeps that require minimal force and locks, jamming and choking techniques.
With enough training all the techniques merge as one and you can respond in an ideal and efficient way to any attack you encounter.
Weaponry
Advanced students can learn classical martial arts skills of spear, sword and sabre, which includes technical exercises partner drills and so on. The training is excellent physical and technical conditioning and the techniques can be applied in self defence with everyday objects that come to hand.
Conditioning exercises
In addition to the above syllabus there are a few very intense physical conditioning exercises more committed students can also practice, particularly those interested in entering competitions and so on. These are exercises that can push your fitness to the highest levels in a very martially relevant way.
